Mark Thompson has been in the Financial Services Industry since 1986. He is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) who specialises in insurance and superannuation advice for both personal and business clients. He is a member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) & the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA). Before that he was a member of the South Australian Police with extensive experience in Prosecution and Education Services.
As an insurance specialist he was invited to become an inaugural member of the Financial Planning Association’s (FPA) Risk Advisory Committee and on occasion consults to various life insurance companies. Some financial planners who prefer to outsource their advice for personal insurance refer their clients to him. Mark’s opinions on life insurance have been published in financial planning magazines.
Mark has a strong belief that insurance should underpin all wealth creation strategies, but it is an area that is all too often overlooked. Insurance statistics also confirm his own experience that illness, not death, is more likely to trigger a benefit payment for a client. Further to this he encourages his clients to protect their lifestyle not just their life.
The importance of policy ownership is also a significant issue. Inappropriate policy ownership could see an insurance benefit go to an unintended recipient such as an acrimonious family member, the Australian Taxation Office or the Trustee in Bankruptcy.
While others might rely on computer generated modelling, Mark believes that experience, research and understanding of policies are factors more likely to provide “ideal advice” to clients. The importance of experience also comes to the fore when assisting clients and their families with insurance claims. Mark encourages clients to make him the first point of contact should a claim arise. He considers this to be a significant point of difference, when compared to some bigger institutions.
Relationship building is very important to him. A survey of his clients showed that in addition to meeting new clients he has been providing ongoing advice to the majority of his clients for between 5 and 10 years.
Community minded, he is heavily involved with the Magill Rotary Club including a stint as Club President. Once a competitive sprinter, he has a keen interest in health and fitness and divides his spare time between attending the football and basketball and spending time with his family.
